Excerpt from: Sentinel Remarkable and his Deadlier 80s Playlist
Completed and will be dropping, January 2026
This is the sequel to my book, “Sentinel Remarkable and his Deadly 80s Playlist.” I actually completed this story earlier last year but for some strange reason, i’ve been sitting on it. Well….No more! I’m determined to release it in the beginning of the year. Please peruse and enjoy!
While I observed the alley, I realized I wasn’t wearing my costume; it was in my bag in the backseat of my car. I would’ve loved to have the weapons and armor it afforded me, but if I wanted it, I realized I would have needed to run around the front of the building to my car, change, and pursue the two guys. That was entirely too many steps and frankly, I didn’t have the time. I wore my leather jacket, (blue of course) Dodgers t-shirt, blue jeans, and my favorite pair of black Chuck Taylors. While I thought I looked stylish, I definitely didn’t look like a superhero, so I needed a disguise.
I turned my shirt and jacket inside out and put them back on, zipping the jacket up. Finding an old, dirty, red plaid scarf on the ground, I picked it up and wiped it off with my hand as best as possible.
The things I do for the superhero trade, I sullenly thought to myself as I wrapped the scarf around my face.
The scarf stunk, and red plaid was not my color at all. However, it covered most of my face, and I left a space open for my eyes so I could see. I just hoped the scarf didn’t have lice.
I was very aware of my weird appearance, with my inside out clothes and a dirty scarf around my face, but I hoped nobody would recognize me in the get-up. Just as I finished tying the scarf tightly around my head, I heard a yelp of agony from across the street.
I took out my phone and turned on my streaming service. I liked to have music on when I worked, and there was no better feeling than kicking bad guy ass to 80s tunes.
Sweet Dreams by the Eurythmics came on, and I put it on at a low volume.
My MP3 player in costume would have been preferable to use instead of my phone, just for the simple sake that if I lost my phone or got damaged in combat, it would’ve caused lots of problems. But I carried on anyway; the adage of old dogs and new tricks droned on somewhere in the back of my mind.
Dashing toward the sound, I ran into another alley and clocked the man in black standing over the haggard man.
“What’s going on here?” I asked, purposely lowering my voice to a grating rasp.
I hoped I sounded scary and dramatic, but with my odd appearance, I probably only succeeded in sounding like a buffoon.
“Get out of here; this doesn’t concern you,” the man in black replied.
His voice was husky and full of menace. He snarled at me with brilliant, white teeth. His dark eyes became coal black. He was already intimidating, but now he looked downright demonic; shadowy daggers formed between the fingers of each of his hands.
Meanwhile, the haggard man’s face was a mass of blood and bruises. He looked at me pleadingly, like he’d rather be anywhere else in the world than in that alley.
“Shadow manipulation, which is actually a limited form of dimensional manipulation. Neat trick. Mind if I give it a try?” I said in response, smiling under my improvised mask.
I made a show of purposely copying the man in black’s power, forming shadow daggers of my own. For the first time that night, his countenance changed from intimidating to shock; he clearly did not expect my response.
Love Will Tear Us Apart, by Joy Division, started to play on my phone.
“I’m gonna say this once: step away from him and walk away,” I said as I made the daggers longer.
“You must be in league with him!” The man in black rasped and then charged at me.
I swear, I really don’t understand what it is about superpowers that make people unreasonable. Then again, there was massive room for improvement in how I handled the situation.
